This tiny Japanese vase was one of the first pieces I collected when I was a little girl. It is rustic looking rather than elegant but its colors are brilliant, and I love the charming oval painting on the front, which shows a bird on a branch surrounded by blue and purple flowers. There's a very small chip in the back of the lip, which appears to have happened before the piece was painted, since there's some orange paint on the edges of the chip (hard to see in the photo). It's marked "Japan" on the bottom, which according to an online site about Japanese porcelain marks indicates that it was made soon after World War II; that fits with my having acquired it in the early '50s. It measures 1 1/2" high and 3/4" in diameter at its widest point.
