The story...
I finally decided my daughter needed a bookshelf, not the hand me down one in the closet, but one she can call her own. Something she can line with books, toys, and art supplies, anything she wants, something fun. Originally I was going to make the traditional rectangle bookshelf with some shelves. Well, I did… kind of. I then decided to paint it to match the green that trims her walls. It was coming together nicely, it looked like a antique bookshelf my great grandmother may have had. As many of you know I make signs as well, why not combine the two I thought. But what could I do? Too many late nights here up at the shop, I thought while pondering something creative to add. It was 8:00 now, I should go home, let everything dry, and surprise her with it tomorrow. I love to listen to music as I work, the ipod and earbuds are I permanent fixture there. Just as I was shutting things down, one song ended then another began to play through my earbuds as I was double checking the locks. ”We might have time for two more but I’m definitely going to do this song” I heard in my ears. It was Stoney Larue’s live album, as he added, “Its the most spiritual song I’ve ever heard in my life, it says a little bit of everything”. He finishes his intro with “It’s a Bob Dylan tune called forever young”. I’ve heard this song years before I ever had kids, even before I was married. I have always loved it. But it has been so long, and this time it meant something to me. Sure it was a tall order as I debated with myself if I really wanted to add hours, perhaps days to this project. Theres only going to be one in the world, its going to be hers, and she’ll really appreciate it one day. As I drove home that night, the words to that song were echoing in my head. Sure I could easily do butterflies, animals, and the alphabet. But I wanted real words not just letters, words to live by. I had to do it, a couple more late nights, but she’s worth every bit of it.
