The earth was a very different place 300 million years ago. Imagine a broad river, muddy and shallow, slowly winding through a lush green flatland riparian environment. A riverbank lined with ferns, some as big as todays trees. Flowering plants war still just in the design phase, this was a land of monocots. One of the rarest species to look for from this location is Equisetum. Today, the genus Equisetum is all that's left of the Equisetaceae family. Also found here are Alethopteris, Neuropteris, Pecopteris, and Sphenophyllum.

These Carboniferous ferns are preserved in the mineral pyrophyllite, which gives them a bold white or silver color. The pyrophyllite is a pyrite pseudomorph.

This aesthetically pleasing fern fossil is a museum grade specimen with several different species perfectly preserved in intricate detail. I live just moments from this stones type locality and have the very best material available. If you want to see quality fern fossil specimens the likes of which have not been on the market since the 70's please contact me. This specimen exhibits highly detailed fossils on both sides in perfect relief.

Measures about 13.5 x 7 inches
both sides pictured

This one has equisetum and a very unusual single leaf with two small leaflets at the base.
