I got this wood from a tree that blew over in a wind storm, saving it from the fire place.

I chain sawed it up and rough turned it, oversize and soaking wet on the lathe. It then sat for a few months till dry. As it dried, it warped out of round into an oval, so back on the lathe it went and was turned to its final size and shape. I then cut the hole and the slot . I sanded it with every grade of sandpaper from 60 up to 1000 grit, to get every last scratch out. I then buffed it with Tripoli and White Diamond. I then applied several coats of Tung Oil, a hard dying natural finish and then a final buffing with Carnauba wax and voilà.

I made the bottom thick for added weight, making it very stable when pulling yarn through the hole.

The rim is thicker than the sides and the inside is concave to help cradle the yarn ball and keep it in the bowl.

The holes and J slot are very smooth and will not snag your yarn.

I finished it with Tung Oil and buffed it incredibly smooth, inside and out, so the yarn ball rolls with very little friction..

This bowl is a great gift for knitters or crocheters.
