SUPER UNIQUE and a totally gorgeous ring! Three genuine, natural, cabochon cut Emeralds surrounded by black enamel..with a hand engraved shank decorated with black enamel as well. Just stunning and I have never seen this style before.

It is a misconception that black enamel was only used for mourning jewelry...it was actually commonly used in late Victorian Engagement rings (I have original antique jewelry catalogs that show black enamel used in engagement rings). It was a very en Vogue to have black enamel in your jewelry....and I can see why, it added a bit of drama to a piece.

In Victorian Times- The Emerald symbolized "Faithful Until Death"
"Of all green things which bounteous Earth supplies,
Nothing in greenness with the emerald vies;
Unchanged by sun or shade, its lustre glows;
The blazing lamp no dimness on it throws." ***

I am not sure if this was an engagement ring or an "after dinner ring" (that is what they call some of the longer rings in the antique catalogs) as it is a bit unique.

Circa 1890s

Tested 14K Positive
