This is a beautifully colored pin created using the micromosaic technique. "Micromosaics are a special type of mosaic that uses unusually small pieces of glass, or in Italian pieces an enamel-like material, to make small figurative images, in this case for jewelry. They began to be made in Italy during the Renaissance, reaching the height of their popularity in the mid 19th century. A distinctive feature of micromosaics is that the stone pieces (tesserae) are usually oblong rather than square. Wearing micromosaic jewelry became popular during the 17th - 19th century."

It is 2 1/2" long and 3/8" wide and stamped 'Made in Italy' on the back.
