This one-of-a-kind journal was upcycled from the 1996 German translation and printing of Bad Girls by Cynthia Voigt.

120 unlined pages (front / back) = 7 signatures with varying numbers of folded sheets.
PLUS 34 original (German) pages (front / back) bound throughout the book.

Spine Length: 8.6 inches (21.9 cm)
Cover Width: 5.35 inches (13.6 cm)
Thickness: 1.25 inches (3.2 cm)

Upcycled hardcover book.
100 lb text weight cream color paper (archival, 30% recycled, made with wind power).
Several feet of green linen bookbinding thread.

I removed the cover from the original book, cutting to size. Then, I carefully dismantled each signature, so that I could rebind original pages within the book. The copyright page and table of contents are bound within the first signature, as are many other pages throughout. I refashioned the title page into a library style pocket for the back - which is intentionally askew (they are Bad Girls! after all). I cut the pages to size, and folded each signature. The lightly toothed paper is excellent with pencil, ink and light applications of a dry adhesive (such as acid-free glue stick). Finally, I bound the book in Coptic style which allows the stitching pattern to be visible on the spine of the book, and allows the book to lie flat for easy writing and drawing.

Frequently asked questions about AmyLBurns

I love making custom hand-bound books! They make wonderful gifts, and most books are perfect to use as guest books, scrapbooks, sketchbooks, and journals. Customize the cover art, cover paper, page paper, or even provide your own vintage cover.

Turn around time for custom work is between 1 and 3 weeks, plus shipping time.
Most items are mailed wrapped in kraft paper, tied with raffia, ribbon, or hemp, with a gift tag. If you require something more, please let me know and I'll work with you to make it happen.
All items are one of a kind and made in a smoke-free / pet-free home with my own two hands, right here in the Green Mountains of Vermont.

The one exception are greeting cards and postcards which are reproductions of my original work, and are printed by me in my studio.
What kind of pen should I use for my book?

The weight and light tooth of the page paper makes it suitable for pencil and ink. Sharpies are discouraged - these seep through paper rather easily, and their acidic chemicals will do unattractive things to your pages over time, shortening their life.

A regular ballpoint pen is okay in a pinch, however I recommend an archival / ph neutral pen (Micron or Faber-Castell are two great and readily available brands). The inks in these pens are meant to last, and they write softly and do not create indents in the pages like ballpoint. You can find many color choices at your local crafts or art supply store, or online if you have time to order.

For black pages, I recommend gel pens or white charcoal.
