Vintage barkcloth placemats, set of 3 sizes, 50s western scene & nautical, in taupe, red and chartreuse rectangular mats with kelly green crocheted edgings.

These mats are not your traditional dining or kitchen table placemats, but more like doilies, meant for your coffee table, side tables, sideboard and/or vanity.

The mats are made of either barkcloth or a barkcloth-like 1950s, or early 1940s, material. Is is soft with a nubby texture and appears to be cotton, possibly vat dyed. Th cloth has shades of a mauve and lighter mauve or taupe, chartreuse, aqua, white, cherry red, slate green and a lighter, sea foam green.

Each placemat contains a different scene, because they were cut from different areas of the bolt of fabric.

The smallest placemat measures 11 1/4" x 7 1/4" or 28.6 cm x 18.3 cm (including trim) and it horizontal in orientation (see photo #2) The scene is of some cowboys wearing red shirts, chartreuse hats, bright green pants with horses of brown and white. There is also the bottom of an oil drilling tower and just the bottom of a spewing oil geiser of red and chartreuse, with workers at the base.

The medium sized mat is vertically oriented and features the full depiction of the geiser. This mat measures 8" x 14 1/4" (including trim) or 20.3 cm x 36.2 cm.

The larges tof the three also lays horizontally. It has the bottom of the cowboy and oil scene, but predominantly is a nautical scene with a red ship , the top of a lighthouse and the corner of a barn near the horses. This mat is more of the size of a traditional placement, it measures 16.5" x 9.75" or 41.9 cm x 24.8 cm

The trim on each is crocheted and hand stitched to the mats.

Condition:
Near mint. There is one discernable stain on the larger mat, but it is very light and not extremely noticeable (see photo # 5 above, which I have darkened at bit in order to see the size of the stain.) I have made no special attempt to remove this stain. There are no other discernable flaw.
