An antique Victorian black silk folding hand fan with embroidery and tassle.

This elaborately decorated fan looks to date to the second half of the 19th century.

The mount is made from black silk which has been machine embroidered in a very fine chain stitch. Metalic gold and multi coloured silk thread have been used to create the design of an extended zig zag stitch border with a repeat pattern of scrolls and stylised foliage.

The sticks and guards are of ebonised wood which has been stamped and painted with floral motifs. The rivet features a small white faceted stone on both sides. It still has its original knotted tassle which is showing quite a bit of wear as seen in the detail photos.

I should think that this piece was intended for formal evening occasions, but it is also possible that it could be a mourning fan.

The condition is very good given its age: there is some wear to the binding of the mount, and a small area where the fabric has come loose from the sticks on the back side. There is also a small chip to one of the sticks at the back.Colours are still nice and bright. Please see all photos.

Measures 11.25" long and is 20" across when open.
