A male and a female sparrow sit on a beautiful blooming dogwood tree branch. Green, white, brown, and a little pale pink are the colors of this wonderful springtime print.

Don't buy a reproduction. This beautiful original book plate was carefully removed from a 75 year old (1937) antique reprint of John James Audubon’s color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (published 1827–1839), which is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed.

John James Audubon (Jean-Jacques Audubon) (April 26, 1785 – January 27, 1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his expansive studies to document all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats.

Size: This is a nice large book plate at 8-1/2 inches wide by just shy of 12 inches high (11-13/16ths inches). Unless noted otherwise, all the book plates I sell from this Audubon book are the exact same size, perfect for framing into groups!

Condition: The illustration is crisp, bright, and flat and has clearly never been exposed to dampness of any kind. The paper is a cream color which has aged beautifully to a gentle parchment color with a touch of extra patina at the edges. It has a fully mat finish with no shine or sheen to detract from appreciating the art at any angle. This book plate is more than 75 years old and so may have slight foxing, dots, and other mild evidence of age. On the back of this book plate is another bird illustration however the paper is thick and so it cannot be seen unless the page is held up to the light.

As with every purchase from my shop, you are buying the ORIGINAL book plate and not a copy or digital reproduction!

Suggestions: Audubon bird art makes a beautiful and striking statement when hung in groups. The fact that this is an original book plate can be highlighted by placing the page atop an uncut mat and then framing rather than framing beneath a cut mat. Typically the text of these book plates is left revealed, once again to appreciate the original nature and origin of the artwork, however it can be covered by a mat if you prefer.

(The black border you see around this print is the black background upon which the print has been laid for the photograph to be taken. There is no mat included with the print.)

A splash of green and yellow is what you'll get with this print! Order this original antique Audubon book plate / print today!
