Beautiful Hand Painted Vintage Chocolate Pot Set, Japanese, 14 pieces
(1 Chocolate Pot with Lid, 6 Cups & Saucers)

Mark on botton of pot and saucers: Japan

Chocolate pots were first designed and used by the Aztecs before being popularized in France during the 1940s by Limoges in porcelain form. What makes JAPANESE chocolate pots special is that the Japanese created a raised three-dimensional effect on the posts called moriage. The flowers resemble Asian paintings.

I discovered this precious porcelain chocolate set at a community flea. The pot, cups and saucers are decorated with pink and blue cabbage roses on a soft ivory background. There are deep green leaves and very subtle touches of Japanese symbols.

Chocolate pot:
Height: 10" from lid to base
Width from tip of spout to back of handle: 7"
Width of base: 5"

The delicate egg shell cups are lovely. One cup has two small chips on the lip. It can still be used, but I would keep this one for display if possible. There are a few places where, if you look closely, flecks of paint have chipped away with use as would be expected with antique porcelain.

Height: 2 5/8"
Width at mouth: 2 5/8"

Width: 5 inches

Comparable Japanese chocolate pot sets regulary sell for $100 and up in shops, on ebay and other auction sites. This is a beautiful set at a great price.
