Art yarn version!

My archaeologist friend recently returned from Alaska bearing a gift: a book called Living Wisdom of the Far North, Tales and Legends from the Chukotka and Alaska. The book is written in both Russian and English, and this colorway was inspired by a legend called "The Quarrel Between The Sun and Moon." In this tale, Sun and Moon each believe that they are the most important and should be master of the earth. Wind is forced to mediate, and convinces them that everything is equally important. I chose an illustration from this story to handpaint onto soft Rambouillet fiber.

This is a HUGE skein-5.2 oz! 105 yards, spun extreme thick and thin.

Each skein of yarn is a labor of love. Recycled or local roving is hand painted with low acid dyes, steamed, and cooled for 24 hours to ensure colorfast yarn and less environmental impact as no dye is being washed down the drain. The roving is drafted and spun on my dreamy Schacht Matchless wheel, wound onto the niddy noddy and fashioned into a skein. Next, I soak the skein of yarn in a spring water and organic grapefruit/eucalyptus essential oil rinse. At this point the wet skein is blocked (dried with weights or on a yarn blocker to remove overtwist) and finally stored, awaiting a new home.
