A pair of rustic hand carved wood figural salt and pepper shakers in the shape of an old man and woman. European, rough but detailed, signed Arpin, with corks. So much character in these old faces: a woman with kerchief knotted under her chin and apron over her dress; a man with cap and beard, trousers, and hand in a pocket.

Each figure measures about 4 and 1/4" tall, fully carved all around front, back, and sides. The woman has holes for pepper, in a letter "P" pattern on the top of her head, and the man an "S" for salt. They have real old cork for plugs and sit on good flat bases.

Signed (tiny chisel carving) Arpin, and almost certainly of northern European or German origin (or possibly North American settlers from there). They are fairly light for their size, and in good shape with just the lightest surface wear and some chunks missing from the corks (superficial, and not affecting their function).

Charming, functional folk art pieces to use or display.
