An example of early feminism? Vintage transferware display plate featuring a Christy Girl (like a Gibson Girl), decked out in her hat, net, car coat and driving gloves and taking the wheel of an old automobile. From 1900 - 1915 and hallmarked "Dresden China".

This is part of the Christy series (meaning its not by Charles Dana Gibson, but instead by Howard Chandler Christy). In the 1890's these illustrators were well known for their successful depiction of the ideal American Woman. "She was strong, self-confidant, self- reliant. She was as much at home driving one of those newfangled horseless buggies, graduating from college, or playing golf as she was at the Society Ball or in the kitchen."

There is very light crazing all over the piece. The gold edge remains bold and clear, with few dings. The transfer image is in great condition. The colors are bright and there really are no scratches. This was obviously a display piece, and not used on a table.

Measures 7 1/4 inches (19.1 cm) across.

This gal is just charming. Secretly, I pretend she is my great grandmother in her heyday!
