Antique Fern Print - Vintage Fern Print - original 1874

Edward Lowe was a renowned English botanist who was interested in many subjects, including ferns. This original bookplate was saved from part of Lowe's most well known work published on ferns, "Ferns: British and Exotic." It was eight illustrated volumes originally published in 1856. This chromolithograph comes from a later volume printed in 1880.

CONDITION: The plates are in extremely good condition. They are 134-years-old and the paper has aged to a creamy color and it's a little darker along the edges due to exposure to light. However, it's minor. On a rare occasion there may be a tiny imperfection, but nothing that would detract. There is no foxing, tears or creases to any of the plates. The colors are very vibrant and beautiful, which is the norm for hand colored plates. The materials they used in the 19th century are so much nicer than the materials used today. The ferns will be stunning displayed in a mat and frame.

Each print measures about 6 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches. They would be beautiful matted and framed...or simply propped on a book shelf.
