A very bold and very unusual pear-cut Labradorite cabochon from Africa measuring 43 x 26 x 10 mm: this 96-carat one of a kind beauty would be a most striking focal point for a pendant or a brooch, or even a most striking cuff bracelet if protection is given to the stone. Or it could even take pride of place as a treasured piece in a collection. This piece would be enhanced either by a setting of a bright metal like white gold, or a darker metal like oxidized silver.

There is a lot of blue flash or labradorescence on both faces of this stone - contrary to the last photo, the labradorescence is actually as distinct on the reverse as it is on the front. What is not visible in the photos is the sparkle from the rutile in the flashing areas between the bands. The bands remain distinct, whatever the direction of the stone, so you will always have the striking contrast of the bands against the electric blue and lime green flashes, no matter how the stone is set.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstone looks under various lighting conditions and different backgrounds. The last picture shows the detail on the back of the gem.

Labradorite has a hardness of 6 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale, as such it should not be cleaned using steam or ultrasonics. It is associated with the astrological signs of Sagittarius, Scorpio and Leo.
