Dunhill is one the most highly regarded lighter manufacturers in the world. They first began producing lighters in London during the 1920s and quickly earned their reputation for elegantly designing high end, fashionable lighters for men. Even today, less expensive vintage Dunhills typically command prices well over $100 and their models made using precious metals and famous European enamels sell for more than $1000!

First made in 1940, Dunhill's Service Lighter was manufactured in the United States for military use. It is one of the few proletariat Dunhill lighter I know and the only model manufactured in the United States. Crafted from rigid steel, their Service lighter retains Dunhill's characteristic quality and rugged durability. Similar to Austrian trench lighters from the 1920s, Dunhill's service lighter uses a windproof, semi-automatic firing mechanism: pushing its lever opens the snuffer cap and turns the spark wheel, igniting the wick. Flints and fuel are added from the bottom, with separate screw access for each chamber (photo #4). The fuel cap is marked with Dunhill's manufacturer's mark.

I don't think this Dunhill has ever been used; it looks to be unfired new-old-stock (NOS). The wick is still white (see photo #4), the spark wheel is clean, there is no char inside the windguard, and its chocolate brown enamel finish is unmarred. I've removed an impacted flint and used compressed air to clear out debris from the removal to return this World War 2 service lighter to rare, like-new condition. It sparks perfectly and is suitable for daily use. It will be shipped with a new Zippo flint and without fluid. (If you plan to only display this lighter, please remove the flint so it does not deteriorate and become re-impacted over time.) I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this Dunhill. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
