Jazz up your feet in this complete set of vintage Japanese footwear: ZORI straw sandals and TABI 100% cotton socks with hook closures.

The split-toe socks, which go over the ankle, are beautifully sewn and are sized to the thong shoes. The straw sandals have a black velvet thong strap. The sole of the socks is made of a heavier woven cotton. The socks close with three brass tabs that fit onto two rows of closures that are 1/2" apart. One tab says "Japan"; another says 10 1/2".

An Etsy visitor wrote in to say, "the Japanese term for the type of closures used on these tabis is kohase. These days Japanes makers are using stretch materials with no closures and some use velcro, which I think is uncomfortable. So, kohase closures are the traditional method used for tabis. which I prefer, since they are adjustable. I just wish yours were in my size, as I would love to have a pair of red ones. The only seller I've found online who offers red kohase tabis charges $50 for the tabis alone."

This sock and sandal pair is likely a 9-10 US shoe size. To find your size, stand on a piece of paper and make an outline of your bare foot, with your pencil ALWAYS PERPENDICULAR to the floor. This is very important and will allow room for your heel. Measure the drawing from the tip of your longest toe to the end of your heel.

Hand or machine gentle wash in cold water, line dry. Hot-water washing and machine drying will shrink the sock.

~ Traditional Tabi or split-toe socks have been worn in Japan since the 16th century. They were developed to wear with thong flip flop-like footwear. Many people wear Tabi socks: practitioners of martial arts ( Aikido, Karate), Taiko drummers, Suzuki actors and traditional Japanese folk dancers.

~ Traditional Zori sandals are made of woven straw with a black velvet thong, which is centered so the shoe can be worn on either foot.

Get cozy comfy this fall and winter with this bargain-priced, vintage, paired Japanese sock and sandal package.
