I don’t even know where to begin to describe this very rich wrap – something that took a lot of time and effort, but provided many hours of peace and calm as I wired and stitched away the long quiet days of summer, tucked away into the cool of my dark little north facing studio. The focal section features the word “goddess” that I stamped into precious metal clay (PMC 99% fine silver) and layered with a wider band of aged brass. This, I stitched onto a length of incredible beaded silk in tones of my favorite sea blue green, with deep olive embroidered accents; I’ve held onto the tiniest bit of that fabric for going on fifteen years, and am down to the last little bit. To keep it secure and soft to touch, I hand stitched it with embroidery thread to a rectangle of softest brown deerskin leather; on either end are triangles of intricate sterling, pieces I had cast from an antique jewelry finding. On the left side of the word section is a length of wired pearls, green amethyst faceted nuggets, and a sterling circular bead that I’ve hammered with XO and signed. This length of wired beads is joined to antique brass watch fob chain, then tied with green sari silk. A gold plated vintage wrist watch case holds within its chamber three sea blue/green pearls, nesting in green moss. On the other side of the word section are more wired beads, joined with one of my “cocoon” beads (wrapped antique kimono silk, embroidery thread, sterling wire, and a variety of seed pearls; under the wrapped fabric is hidden a bit of antique found poetry). Ending the length is a silverplate watch fob clasp.
I carried this piece of jewelry high up a mountain with me in the rockies of Colorado, to a place called Windy Ridge, where ancient (over 1,000 years old) bristlecone pines – the oldest living things on this earth – stand in an open area where they hold strong against the wind and the cold. On one of these tree branches I hung this goddess piece, so the tree could feel that it had been decorated for a little while.
Total length of Goddess is 38”.
