Incredible cast sterling silver mask pendant has a chevron textured field, sculpted nose and eyebrows, and pierced facial details complimented by enameling. The basse-taille enameled areas include the top of the mask (emerald green), the brow (black), and a cobalt blue triangle at the bottom. The whole piece is given an outline with a raised textured decoration. It seems to be of Scandinavian origin, possibly Finnish due to its style, though the markings are not consistent with any national silver marks. It is in every way a quality-made piece, with a nice thickness and contour, along with a large, sleek oval bale.

With its strong lines, and spare style, its design is at once ancient and modern. A timeless representation of the everyman/everywoman mask. It is of undetermined origin. It has two marks on the bale. It is stamped “925” in an incuse stamped oval. The other mark is “59 AR” in an incuse oval with pointed bottom. “AR” might be a maker’s mark, but it could also stand for ARGENT (silver). It might also be a date mark or a style number. More questions than answers. Please convo me should you know anything more.

Masks have a universal appeal. "Mask • n. an object typically for protection, disguise, performance, or entertainment. Used since antiquity for ceremonial purposes."

I think it has presence and power. It is in excellent condition without any enamel loss (just lighting glare). Would look great paired with a simple thick snake chain (contact me should you need one), neck ring, or a thick leather cord. Guessing, c. 1960’s-1970’s

SIZE: 2-3/8”L x 1-1/8”W (excluding bale); bale = ½”H WEIGHT: .456 oz.
