This vase started out on my wheel here in my Southern California studio. While this piece was still soft and pliable, I created the swirling faceted pattern using a paddle. As it dried out, I did some hand carving and continued to paddle it several times as it dried to remind it the shape that it is supposed to stay. It is 5 inches tall, and glazed inside and out with my silver crystalline glaze. Raw colbalt was used to create subtle blue accents where the glaze breaks.

All of the crystalline glazes that I use are original glazes invented myself. Each crystalline glazed piece is unique in that they cannot be duplicated. The crystals are never the same from one piece to another.

I use high fire porcelain, and fire to a peak temperature of 2350°F – aka cone 11 for you pottery people. What this means is that the porcelain is fully vitrified and water tight even without the glazes. Because of the way that I fire and the glazes that I use, all of my work is fully functional – water tight, lead free, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe.
