Designed by German chemist, Peter J. Schlumbohm, Ph.D., in 1941, the Chemex coffeemaker is known for its outstanding design and of course, the quality of the coffee it brews using a paper filter. Some of the unique design elements include the use of laboratory grade glass, an "air channel" so that air displaced by pouring liquid can escape and of course the two-piece wood collar held together by a piece of rawhide and wood bead.

"Produced by hand, the clarity of the blown glass and fine workmanship can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art."

This particular Chemex is in excellent condition and shows almost no signs of wear. The collar is in perfect condition and the original rawhide remains supple and pliable. Some of the stain on the rawhide string has bled to the collar, but is of course imperceptible when in place.
