This mill takes its design from a special kind of lighthouse known as 'Sparkplug' lighthouses. So called because of their distinctive shape. In the very early days (late 1800's) they were referred to as 'Bug lights'. This term was coined because at a distance the lights looked very short and broad, much like a bug on the surface of the water.

They mostly were placed off shore in the sounds and bays of the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. They are self-contained units, with the keeper's quarters built into the tower then placed on top of a solid foundation such as a concrete or stone caisson. There aren't many left as I understand but they all take on this very characteristic shape, with only slight variations. My version here is not a historical replica but, I do think it does a fair job at celebrating the genre.

Not only pretty to admire but capable of hard, everyday work in the kitchen. The 'cast iron' body is constructed of one solid piece of American Cherry hardwood. It's finished in a clear urethane revealing the rich, natural red-brown tones of the Cherry. The 'concrete' base is part of the same piece of Cherry but given a wash of stains to help carry the theme of a weathered and rust-stained foundation. The characteristic Bug light lantern housing is made from Ebony. An extremely durable and dense wood from Africa with a jet black appearance. It is polished to a high luster. The lens of the lantern is White Ash.

Structural Dimensions:
The actual height is 11.5 inches (29.2 cm)
The width at the base is 3.5 inches (8.8 cm)
**This mil will not fit in my Rock Pile Pepper-Dust Coaster/Containment Tray

This Bug Light mill, being true to form is short and a bit wider than most shoreline lighthouse mills I've made. It comes with the standard stainless steel grind mechanism with an aluminum shaft. All made here in the U.S.

This mill can be fitted with a ceramic grinding mechanism for use with salt. Please state your preference in the 'note to seller' box when placing your order. If no mention is made, the standard pepper mechanism will be supplied.
