:: Snake Eye ::

This beautifully etched Eye Ring from the Drylands Incantations series is simple but striking. The partial image of an old engraving of a rattlesnake peeks intriguingly out from behind a riveted assembly of a vintage coin and a wonderfully pointy antique gear.

I like the way that you don't see all of the snake, but only part of it. It adds to the mystery of the piece...a hint of a coil, the edge of the rattle. Only when you look at it closely do you realize what it is. The nickel is a warm silver color which went very gold in the warm reflected sunlight of the photos. The truest color reproduction is actually in the side-on view of the second photo.

Not wanting to obscure any more of the design, I opted for a small coin for this one, a tenth-penny from old British West Africa that dates back to the mid 20th century. It is bronze, with a deep patina, and is surmounted with an antique brass clock gear which I've been saving for just the right piece. Paired with the serpent, its sharp edges evoke the spines of the desert and gives the ring a slightly dangerous aura: don't tread on me.

Atop the gear is a cast white bronze crinoid stem fossil that has a deeply eroded stonelike texture; atop that is a hammered bronze washer and the sterling silver rivet that holds the assemblage together. There's also another washer inside the coin, as the coin was cast with a large hole in the center and required the washer to stabilize the rivet. But, as sometimes happens, the washer stayed loose even as the rivet was compressed, and rattles very quietly...so the rattlesnake ring actually rattles a little!

The shank is sterling silver, hammered on my anvil of desert rock, and riveted together. The three-rivet construction is my own design and makes for a very strong and stable ring. The band is also tapered for extra comfort.

The Eye Ring series is a takeoff on the Evil Eye amulets that are found in many parts of the world. Usually shaped like eyes themselves--especially blue ones!--they are believed to protect the wearer from the deleterious effects of the Evil Eye. This one has an extra bite to it!

Size: Ring size is 7-7 1/4. The etched nickel bezel measures 50mm x 32mm.

Care: Wash with soap and water as desired. You may polish the metal with a jeweler's polishing cloth if you like.

The Snake Eye ring will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a square Drylands Incantations ring box. See the sample listing for similar examples and more info.
