Three-piece carving set consisting of a 1847 Rogers Bros. "First Love" knife and fork in original box and a sharpening steel of unknown origin. The "First Love" knife and fork were introduced in 1937 and discontinued in 1973. The gold and black label on the inside lid of the box reads "Look for the Year Mark 1847 Rogers Bros. For 90 Years America's Finest Plate."

The box is covered on the outside with what appears to be textured red fabric over cardboard and includes a plastic protective cover with metal corners that fits over the cutlery. The interior is lined with the original burgundy felt; the bright red support pieces are not original. The outside bottom of the box is covered with heavy black paper. The original snap front closure is missing. The box shows wear with one considerably worn spot on the top-left rear corner.

The First Love carving knife and fork are monogrammed with the initial "M." The knife has an 8" stainless steel blade marked CARV-EZE on the obverse and 1847 Rogers Bros. Stainless on the reverse. OAL: 13 1/4 in. The blade shows signs of sharpening as well as scratches on the flat side.

The matching two-tyne serving fork is marked STAINLESS. OAL 11 3/8". The silverplated handle has some scratches.

The sharpening steel is not original to the set and has a nicely embossed silverplated handle in the art nouveau style, which may mean it's an older piece. Unfortunately, the butt of the handle is dented. (Use the zoom button for a detailed view.) There is also evidence of repairs made where the rod enters the handle. This piece is not marked.

All three pieces come in individual green silvercloth bags (not original). The approximate value of a "First Love" serving knife and fork is $225 according to silverpattern.com. The price of this set reflects its condition and the fact that the sharpening steel has been replaced.
