This is a really fine Trade Bead. It was made in Murano probably some time in the 18th Century. These beads were used in trade, carried in the holds of ships doing trade with Africa. The bead has had quite a history and was brought to the United States by African Bead Traders. I have been buying beads from them for about 40 years. These beads, relatively easy to buy twenty years ago have become increasing more rare as collectors seek them out, and they have gone up in value considerably also. This bead, in great condition, a beautiful example of the amazing ability of those lamp workers in Murano to work in glass with so much less equipment than we bead makers have at our fingertips today is there to be marveled at! Long, slim, wearable because I set it on a two knot cord. The bead is 39 mm long.
