From The Feast of Erasure:

What We Need To Remember

Underneath a sheen of dust
rests her husband's razor,
stubble still clinging to the blade –
the last of him,
enough to share morning with,
then shut the door.

From Nuns Shooting Guns:

Cut Flowers

After her double mastectomy and the surgeon’s knifings healed,
Joelle asked her daughter
where she had gotten her tattoo.

They sat together in the parlor,
sixteen hours all told,
the ink-gun buzzing like bees
replacing honey stolen from the hive.

That summer, she slices through surf
on her new board,
shocking onlookers
when she strides through breakers
and onto the beach
wearing only bikini bottoms -no top -
just a spray of morning glories there.

The shore patrol insist, “Put something on.”
“On what,” she’d like to know.

The sun curls around the crest of waves
just beyond the sandbar.
The tide is ebbing
and there’s no time to lose.

Contains Scenes of Indigenous Nudity:

Riders of Untamed Horses

We must forget about saddles and reigns.
These things are of no use
to falling into rhythm and muscle
and breath, no use for whisking off
to places we didn’t think
we wanted to see, that they could
blur by so fast, that the world
is brush strokes of color
and all the irrelevant details
obscured, and we are left
with whirling
pared-down essence,
the roll of the land,
our own streaming faces,
laughing as wind
scours away
what we have etched
with amateur eyes.
