This is one of those rare children's books that gets it right on every level...rollicking, rhythmic rhyming, zany plot, quirky illustrations...and the end result is a creation that will linger in the memory long after childhood has passed. Like Green Eggs and Ham and Tikki Tikki Tembo, you will find it very hard to resist getting "a lovely light luscious delectable cake" stuck in your head for all eternity! Absolutely marvelous for reading aloud.

Our friend the Duchess is bored, and so she decides to bake a cake. Never having tried this before and spurning all recipes, she puts together a wacky concoction with waaaay too much yeast. A la I Love Lucy, it gets out of hand quickly and she finds herself towering above the castle on an ever growing mound of cake. Despite the best efforts of the Duke, King, Queen and army to get her down, it is the quick thinking of her littlest daughter Gunhilde that saves the day.

This 1950s paperback is in good vintage condition. The pages show light use minimal use wear and the cover has shelfwear with some rubbing. Spine is strong and pages are tightly bound. There is an inventory sticker from another bookshop on the back cover and the remnants of a price sticker in the upper corner of the front. Very nice copy with years of love left in it.

Hard to find vintage kids book The Duchess Bakes a Cake, great illustrations, crazy baking recipe, retro rhyming read aloud gold
