This hand built figurine was not based on any particular sculpture, but inspired by the many seated, voluptuous goddesses that were discovered throughout Asia Minor (present day Turkey). Her legs morph into the spiral, which is a common motif of goddess worship. She is 4.5 inches high and has a 3.5 inch width. Because no two pieces are ever alike, she is one of a kind and while the process can be repeated, the results always vary.

I call these goddesses Archaeology Goddesses because they look like they have recently been dug up from the ground. Many goddesses were found in fire pits in caves and they remind me of something that could have been discovered in such an archaeological dig. If you are looking for a smooth, perfect looking goddess, this really isn't the piece for you. She has unique colors, burn marks and copper carbonate residue.

I fired this piece in a charcoal starter, which is a process where you take the unglazed bisque fired pottery piece and surround it with organic/inorganic materials such as seaweed, chemicals, fertilizer, manure, copper wire as well as wood chips, sawdust, or pine needles. The piece is then placed within the charcoal and lit. After several hours, the charcoal and wood has run it's course, and the heated pottery is carefully lifted out using tongs. As there is no glaze applied, the finish is matte and the colors are muted and can exhibit colors such as burgindy, pink, grey, brown and black.
