This kitty's wide open pupils signal its attention is focused on something not seen in the painting. Just a tip of pink tongue is revealed, further indicating the jaw is about to open in what is known as the Flehmen Response.

I often see my cat Neko (and other cats) display the Flehmen Response. Cats draw a scent into the Vomeronasal organ located in their mouths. In this way, a cat can "taste" a smell or "smell" a taste. Sources on the internet state that the organ and its purpose was discovered in 1813 and predators are not the only animals to exhibit this behavior. Horses, for example, also display the flehmen response.

This painting measures 4 X 5 inches. Painted on birch wood panel, ready to frame or display as is on a shelf or mantel. Small size means you can splurge on the kind of frame -- go wide frame, go ornate, go gold!

The model for this painting is a rescued kitten at a no-kill shelter. As with all my paintings of homeless shelter felines, a percentage of sale will be donated to PetPawsSee in Great Falls, Montana.
