Cladophora aegagropila, was first discovered in 1823 by the Austrian botanist Dr. Anton E. Sauter in Lake Zeller Austria. It was then discovered in Lake Akan in the early 20th century by Tetsuya Kawakami, and by 1921 was declared to be a "Special Japanese National Treasure". The Marimo Matsuri (Spherical Algae Festival) is held for three days in early October.

The Marimo Ball has a legend of two lovers wanting to be together, when they couldn't, they fell into the water and their hearts became the Marimo Balls. Marimo Balls will bring your heart's desire to both the receiver and the giver, which makes the Marimo a green ball of good luck and love.
