This listing is for two hanks of fair trade handspun recycled cotton sari yarn. Each hank weighs about 100 grams, for a total of approx. 200 grams (7+ ounces). Each skein is about 100-105 yards, for a total of 200+ yards. You will receive the exact skeins shown in the photos, both for just $11.25. The 3rd photo includes a penny for scale.

This fun, colorful yarn is made by a women's collective whom I've worked with for years - your purchase helps these women escape poverty and send their children to school. This yarn is made from scraps of cotton fabric gathered from textile mills and apparel factories. Each hank is different, but I've grouped similar colorways together so that you can create a large project without any telltale line where a new hank begins. The diameter and twist vary within each hank - weight is generally heavy dk to worsted. There may be a couple splices or discontinuities within each hank. This yarn may not be completely colorfast when wet - I recommend handwashing separately in cold water with a gentle detergent.

As you can see, this recycled cotton yarn is considerably less expensive than the same weight of my Super Premium recycled sari silk yarn. The popularity of recycled silk yarn and ribbon in recent years has led to much higher prices for silk scraps - years ago they were free or nearly so, now demand is high so mills and factories sell their silk trash for increasingly high prices. My women's collective is able to obtain cotton scraps at a much cheaper rate, and we're passing the savings on to you. Another advantage of recycled cotton yarn is the greater variation in color - casual cotton garments are manufactured in a wider range of colors than formal silk attire (which is dominated by red and pink). The disadvantage of this recycled cotton yarn is that it is not as soft and smooth as my Super Premium silk sari yarn.
