Offered is this 'extreme antique' glass fishing float with intact once tarred net and early double 'FF' mark. What good fortune to have this 'Great Grandfather' grace your home and encourage your dreams. This vintage glass fishing float measures 9-1/2" diameter (the glass) with the net adding substantially to the diameter, and circumference measuring a total of 33" including the net width.

You gotta love old and rustic with lots of history to fall in love with this hand blown glass fishing float. Somehow when my help spent a Saturday afternoon with scrub brush and soap suds in hand, this 'gem' of the old sea arts escaped its bath! Fortunately, it's suitable for den, deck, rec room or garden. For featured indoor display the glass could use a bit of clean up. A sponge scrubbie or soft brush will do the deal. Or, you may feel fine to leave it as is.

If you do use a brush to clean this or any netted glass fishing float, please be gentle with nets. While it shows obvious natural wear, the 100% cotton rope, once tarred to prolong its life, is still snug, intact and in very good condition. I see one tine or section of rope near the top that appears fragile, a bit shredded from use, though still intact. Original, authentic, old tarred working nets are a luxury to find these days. They deserve respect and care.

This very old glass fishing float shows normal surface wear to the thick, quality antique glass. Expect to see random small patches of light 'frosting' here and there from decades of sand-blasting, along with some buffs and the odd scrape from service at sea. You'll enjoy the lovely swirling in the glass, which along with the collectible net and terrific mark make this one a keeper. (Note: The little guy float is not part of this sale. 2-1/2" diameter, shown for size comparison.)

A little history: The 'Double F' or 'FF' was used for around 4 decades, beginning in the early 1940's with the North Sea Canned Crab Company (though probably manufactured by Sasa Glass Company) and later on used by a successor, the famous Hokuyo Glass manufacturing company. The mark apparently stands for 'kita' meaning "north" in Japanese. These were companies or businesses "of the north". (Thank you, A Woods and W Pich).

Later 'FF' marks tend to be stylistically 'fat', very gracefully scripted somewhat like calligraphy. Variations of the style of the mark exist and can be tracked in their evolution with the very oldest being more primitive, or 'stick like' in appearance, and originally stamped as a stand alone. Later the second seal was used on which to place the mark, even though still in the earlier stages, with the mark appearing more 'stick like' or straight.

This 'FF' is more 'stick like' with clear, straight, simple lines. While not primitive and appearing on its own separate seal, this one is earlier version! Plus the 'FF' seal itself is in terrific condition - showing no chips, no nicks or damage to the edges. A real sweetheart. (View both seals in photo #4.) The larger seal 'button' measures about 3-1/2" diameter. It's well crafted, nice and thick. Good fortune - it's surround edges are also in great condition - no chips, no nicks or gazing to the edges. This once hard working, unassuming glass fishing float is a beautiful thing - a treasure that would make a unique and unforgettable gift.
