This is a truly wonderful find, a very unlikely looking ship indeed inside an aqueously green bottle. The bottle is 12 inches long, and comes with a little leather-covered stand which has been glued with perhaps too much enthusiasm to the bottom (drips present). The ship's name is in front, shown in the third photo. The ship is composed of wood and stiff paper and has a multitude of sails, the waves it sits on appear to be some sort of resin. My favorite detail is the rather furry plume of smoke blowing backward from the steamship funnel.

The bottle has marks on the bottom, two small shields. The dimple in the bottom seems to forecast stormy weather (see last photo). The label on the neck reads "Made in England, Stockton on Forest". Stockton on Forest is a very small village in York, at present they no longer seem to be making ships in bottles there. This was probably made in the 1960s, it is definitely much later than the era in which the ship itself was made.

The "Great Britain" was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, incorporating new screw propeller technology, and put into service as a transatlantic passenger ship in 1845. Presaging the Titanic, it ended up stranded in 1846 and put its parent company out of business. A long and checkered career followed, sold for salvage, used for the transportation of convicts to Australia, scuttled, and finally raised in 1970, it now resides at the ship museum in Bristol, England. You can even get married on it.
