This little book is a delicate accordion that incorporates two printmaking techniques and a collection of mixed papers, including pages salvaged from a vintage geometry textbook.

The covers are printed with a gridded pattern using a drypoint technique. I used a collograph process to print subtle lines inside the book, which are reminiscent of notebook paper used in school. I folded and cut papers into geometric shapes (triangles, trapezoids, rectangles, and parallelograms) and sewed them into each fold of the accordion. The pages are made from an assortment of papers including notebook paper, graph paper, and pages from vintage geometry textbooks.

I've titled this book "Isosceles Romance." The inspiration stems from a high school geometry class where I first met my future-husband. The first time we talked, he asked me a question about isosceles trapezoids (from our geometry homework). Somehow that lead to our first date, and — nine years later — marriage. We always give credit to geometry for the start of our relationship.

There were twelve books made as part of this "Isosceles Romance" series, but each is a little bit different. The one you receive may not be the exact book shown in this listing, but it will be very similar.

This book is 3.5 x 3.5 inches when closed, and 26 inches long when unfolded.

All books are made in a smoke-free, pet-friendly environment.

About the artist:
Katie Gonzalez studied the art of bookmaking in Cortona, Italy during the summer of 2006. Visiting a medieval bindery, working with luxurious materials, and learning to make paper by hand instilled a sense of traditional techniques into her work. She combines that background with her contemporary graphic design degree from the University of Georgia. She lives and works in East Nashville with her husband and her brindle bullmastiff.
