Here's a beautiful antique glass fishing float, a 3 piece hand molded glass float that's 'to die for' or better 'to live for'! This wonderful vintage glass fishing float is in excellent condition, representing the very best of the old Japanese or Korean sea arts. Called 'Teal Midnight' because it will inspire you day and night, it measures 3-1/2" diameter or 10-7/16" in circumference. The popular size is referred to by collectors as 'baseball' size for easy reference. Teal Midnight bears an 'uncommon' mark. This splendid glass fishing float sparkles and glows with swirling combined with its mass of hand whittled imprints over the entire body of the float!

This variety is a favorite among collectors and always a favorite of mine with the superior, ingenious construction and gorgeous dappling on the surface. This is the fortunate result of wooden molds that were hand-whittled or carved out by hand. The glass was poured into the molds, bringing these glorious 'works of art' into being. Intended for hard work at sea, these marvelous old glass fishing floats were one of the fisherman's main tools, put to use with the intention of a prolific and prosperous catch.

Generally each side of the southern hemisphere on the 3 piece molded glass fishing floats shows a clear mark, often called 'hash' marks, in the form of simple Roman numerals such as I, II, III, or IV. These were used primarily as a means of matching the lower two halves in the process of production. Other more obscure marks were occasionally used and Teal Midnight is one of those lucky exceptions.

Notice the beautiful, clear strike '10' on the side of the float in photo #3. Also in photo #4. Arabic numerals were commonly used to mark non-molded, hand blown baseball size glass fishing floats, (although it should be noted when I say "commonly", that only about 20% of floats are marked). And the popular Arabic numerals used on the hand blown types are usually '1' through '6'. We seldom or never (?) see Arabic numerals used on the 3 piece molds with exception of the 'uncommon' or 'rare' numerals such as: 10, 12, 31 or 11 (rare). For whatever reason or no reason these numerals seldom are seen and the gaps in numerical sequence seems to be the norm! Teal Midnight bears an 'uncommon' Arabic numeral '10' and it's a perfect strike! You'll go a long ways (and so will I) to locate an 'uncommon' mark on a 3 piece molded glass fished float. Beauty!

Teal Midnight is a 2nd generation (Post-WW II) Korean or Japanese fishing float. The seal 'button' on this three-piece float shows the typical 'umbilical' type surround indentation near the outermost edge of the seal. The seals are mostly uniform and nicely crafted in the 2nd generation of 3-pc molded floats. View the seal in photo #4. Notice how it's an artifact worthy of museum quality display. The seal is in MINT condition, showing no chips, no nicks and no grazing to the surround edge. The center of the seal is wonderfully 'textured'. It has been said the better or master glass makers used to 'texture' their seals. This one miraculously has survived decades of service in rough seas. It's in terrific condition. Teal Midnight is a true treasure - a definite keeper:)
