Josephine Baker 1906 – 1975 was an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress. Born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, she became a citizen of France in 1937.
Fluent in both English and French, Baker became an international musical and political icon. She was given such nicknames as the "Bronze Venus", the "Black Pearl", and the "Créole Goddess".
Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou, to integrate an American concert hall and become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the unofficial leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, but turned it down), for assisting the French Resistance during World War II and for being the first American-born woman to receive the French military honor, the Croix de guerre.
This lovely studio photo features the sultry Miss Baker in Paris back in the Twenties. This amazing black and white studio shot is from a volume of legendary performance artists and dancers published in the Seventies.
"Josephine Baker" measures 6" x 10" and 8" x 10.75" overall with the border; printed on heavy quality paper with a soft matte finish. It's clean, smooth, and flat with firm edges. There's another illustration of a very young Fred and Adelle Astaire printed on the backside.
Matted, framed, and displayed as a gallery grouping, these lovely old black and white photo book print illustrations are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photos are just to show how this might look when it's matted and framed. Your print will come to you unmatted and unframed.)
