This is an older cameo, from the 1800's to early 1900's at my best estimate. The setting is quite crude, which is an interesting contrast the the exquisitely carved Greek or Roman Goddess cameo, with a straight "Roman" nose. The cameo is genuine shell. This piece is not signed or marked, but the setting appears to be gold filled flat wire that has been rolled or twisted and etched with a crude floral pattern. The pin hinge and style of the pin catch also help to date this piece.

The brooch is 1 3/4 inches by 1 5/8 inches with a dimensional height of 7/16 inches. The cameo is 1 5/16 inches by 1 1/16 inches.

This piece is in good condition. The genuine shell cameo does have some horizontal hairline cracks on the face side of the cameo, these are not long, and don't go all the way through the shell. The metal has use and wear marks. The metal has some tarnish, the pin has a ding in it. The pin and catch function well, but the pin has to be snapped out of the catch. The catch hold on the pin is very secure when closed. The setting has a very crude construction as stated above, and the metal has some waves and bends from the original crafting.

This is a really interesting piece with an exquisite cameo and a crude setting that none the less has a great look. A fabulous genuine carved shell Victorian cameo.
