This is a hand-thrown, sgraffito style trivet. The skull drawn on it was found on the beach near my house.
The way these are made is thus:
I thrown the piece on the wheel and trim and smooth it when it dries out a bit. Then I paint black slip (Pigment enriched, very watery clay) over it and wait for it to dry some more. Then I scratch into the surface, through the slip to the white clay underneath. It creates a very wood-cut-looking piece when it is done. If you want to watch a very quick video of me making a raven skull trivet, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UU8xOLuFjxUaipjMx2tqixfQ&feature=player_detailpage&v=SNzJksEem7o
I will include in the package felt pads to stick on the bottom to prevent scratches to a wooden surface. Once the pads are on, you CANNOT put it in the dishwasher, or you will wash the pads off. So this way you have a choice :)
This one measures about 6" across and is glazed in a clear, durable glaze for long wear. It is microwave safe, food safe, oven safe and dishwasher safe. I make all my own glazes, and strictly avoid carcinogenic and toxic ingredients. It was hand thrown thrown on the wheel and then altered. He has his name (Pussyfoot) and number (4797) on the bottom as well as the skeletaldropkick logo and my name and the year.
