Antique white crackle-glazed crock made by Villeroy and Boch in Dresden Germany. A simple, yet beautiful, lidded serving piece to keep food warm.

A lovely antique piece of kitchenware, this for be used for food storage, cookies, a soup tureen, or lidded serveware. This piece may have been made for baking, although I would do some more research before putting it in the oven myself. The lid is very flat with an inset handle, which makes this perfect for stacking another jar to save space in a small kitchen. The glaze is perfectly smooth and extremely glossy, great condition for its age!

What really makes this piece interesting is its history. Villeroy & Boch has been producing pottery since 1748 and is still popular today. The Dresden factory, where this piece was made began operation in 1856 and produced simple tableware for everyday use, of the highest quality, but still affordable for most families. This remained the largest factory of Villeroy and Boch, until it was forced to close in 1930, as the Nazi party declared it unessential to the war. The factory opened a few months later, but at a fraction of its original production, and was destroyed by bombing in 1945.

Thus, it is difficult to pinpoint the precise date of this piece, but it is certainly pre-WWII., which attests to its quality. There is only one little surface chip on the edge of the lid and the glaze has a beatiful aged, crackled patina. This is a very old and very unique piece of kitchenware.

It is marked on the bottom of the pot and lid with Villeroy & Boch's mark with an image of the god Mercury, Dresden, and Made in Germany.
