Occasionally, I'm able to obtain a piece of rare or unusual wood, which is always exciting for a woodturner. In this case, it's a delightful species from the Caribbean known as Blue Mahoe (Talipariti elatum). It grows in Cuba, and Jamaica (where it's the national tree). The tree produces hibiscus-like flowers, and so is also known as "Hibiscus elatus".

The wood of Blue Mahoe often has tones of blue, blue-green, and gray; this particular piece has a somewhat violet-gray color. The grain has a definite resemblance to that of Elm. Blue Mahoe wood is hard, and has traditionally been used in the making of musical instruments (Caribbean "cuatros"), fine sculptures and jewelry.

After this weed pot* vase was completed, the wood apparently dried out a bit more, and the rim now has a slight little warp to it, barely noticeable; there's no extra charge for that added touch of charm :)

The vase stands 7 inches high, with a max diameter of 3 inches. Finished in a durable semi-gloss, and buffed silky-smooth.

Item # BM01.
* A weed pot, or twig pot, is a vase made to hold dried weeds, flowers, grasses, feathers, etc, that you can find in any field, forest edge, or roadside, particularly in the fall. It is not to be filled with water.
