Ever since i began designing and creating jewelry, i’ve used the power of a word, or words, of emotion, within most of the pieces i’ve created all these nearly 30 years. Sometimes, in the more elaborate designs, i’ve combined words with imagery; other times, for simplicity’s sake, i’ve focused on a single word to offer strength and focus to she (or he) who wears the piece.
Years and years ago, i began collecting antique and vintage metal alphabet stamp sets. I love the old weathered boxes in which they are stored, with their stains and dents and sometimes with the owner’s name inscribed with pencil on the bottom or side; i love, as well, the stamps themselves, sturdy and old and simple in their approach to work with numbers and letters. Those sets are becoming harder and harder to find; a lot of folks are making jewelry now, and a lot of people seem to be collecting the stamp sets along with me.
A few weeks ago, when pulling things off of shelves and sorting studio space, i ran across one of my larger metal antique stamp sets, and decided to use the stamps to hammer succinct words of affirmation into aged brass. It has been a zen-like act to sit at my old studio table and work with the letters, one by one, centering and aligning them to form a word permanently into metal. The aging and buffing process of the brass lends a sage, weathered look and feel, and gives the words more visual depth. For added beauty, i’ve layered the brass with thin strips of antique ivory on the back – ivory that once graced the tops of antique piano keys. At the top, i’ve looped sterling wire to form a sturdy, lovely loop that can be fastened to any of my “prologue” necklace chains or pearls, either by attaching to a watch fob clasp or by simply tying onto a necklace with a bit of ribbon or leather. Dangling from the bottom is a sterling wire-wrapped, faceted pyrite drop. The pendant rectangle measures 2” in length, ½” in width.
