Ghostly, greenish-blue fire and color in a large, high dome Australian opal is accented by a very sparkly steel-blue natural sapphire. The sapphire is perched on two small silver balls which are balanced by a larger silver ball at the bottom of the pendant.

The opal will often show a very bright and pretty orange colored arc on its side. The effect happens when fairly bright light is directed at it from the opposite side. The transmitted light is focused into an arc because the opal is translucent. I did not photograph this effect, but the arc is very attractive.

This solid opal is a blend of semi-crystal near the top with a definite fire pattern that gradually transitions to what is known as jelly opal near the lower portion. Its fire is most prominent outdoors or in bright indoor lighting. I cut this opal from a much larger piece of Australian rough.

The highly polished pendant is about 32 mm x 14 mm (about 1 1/4 x 9/16 inches). The opal itself is 12.7 carats and 22.8 x 13.4 x 6.3 mm ( about 7/8 x 1/2 inches and 1/4 inches thick). The diameter of the sapphire is 3.5 mm. The opal's bezel is finished with a bright cut around the rim and the pendant has a hidden bail (loop) on the back. A dark background is behind the opal to prevent reflections from the silver backplate.

The sterling silver chain is included - your choice of 16 or 18 inches.
