Standing about .75" at the shoulder, with lovely hand-drawn mane and tail, a gentle eye, and faded gold luster horn and hooves, this beautiful and magical creature would look wonderful on a lapel or in a specially constructed diorama of a garden.

For less than a decade, in the 1980s, I had a thriving retail and wholesale business, designing, making and selling enamel animal pins.

Very much ahead of their time in conception and consciousness of animals as sentient beings, these pins were made in a truly ancient medium, enamel on copper, which dates back millennia.

Each pin was hand-cut, by me or an assistant, with a jeweler's saw from 18 or 20 gauge sheet copper, covered, always by me, with powdered vitreous enamel and fired in a small kiln at 1800 degrees Fahrenheit at least twice, and then polished and soldered to a nickel-silver pin back, polished again, and signed and dated, by me, with an engraving tool.

The average size of the pins is around an inch, although some were as much as three inches. I always did all of the enameling, and the line work, which I drew with a crow-quill pen, using extremely finely ground enamel in an oil medium.

I still have a small supply of these pins, and I have decided to release them to new homes.
I hope you will love them as much as I enjoyed making them at the time. I will not make their like again.

The photographs of these pins were taken by my son, of whom I am inordinately proud. The background is fine sand, which may give a sense of scale. Future pictures may include a penny for further scale.

Each pin will come in its original packaging and a hand-decorated upcycled gift box, with a no-message gift card depicting one of my original pin designs.
