This pendant is one of a series of unique works I created depicting Astrolabe devices.
I handcut this sterling silver faceplate using a tiny sawblade, and riveted it to a double layered backing of handcut oxidised copper from an antique basin, attaching it together with sterling silver rivets.

The word "Astrolabe" is derived fro the Greek word Astrolabos, meaning "Star Taker".
An Ancient calculating device thought to be invented around 150BC, used to tell time and the position of the sun and stars in the sky.
The type of astrolabe I have based my designs on is called a Planispheric Astrolabe.
It shows the human understanding of planetary and solar movements and the geometric nature of navigation

This pendant is 3.5cm in diameter, with a 45cm oxidised sterling silver chain.

Every piece I create is handmade by me in my workshop by the beach in Wellington, New Zealand. Hand cut metal, riveted and polished, each piece is lovingly handcrafted, making every piece a unique work of art.
