In the 1620s, health benefits were first attributed to the sea waters around Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England. (The waters contained magnesium sulphate.) The early 18th century was Scarborough's heyday as a spa and early sea-bathing town. Its fame was aided by its famous Spa 'Governor' Richard 'Dicky' Dickinson (1669-1739). He took up his role in 1732 and brought along his mistress, Peggy, to see to the more delicate needs of ladies. One feature of the spa treatments was purging, thought to counterbalance that period's rampant gluttony among the moneyed classes. Scarborough water was considered nifty for its purging properties.

Dickinson suffered from physical deformity (weirdly bent limbs and a truly unprepossessing face) but made great play of it. He was known for outrageous crudeness and ribald humor and this was thought a great attraction by Scarborough's wealthy patrons. 'Dicky' became a celebrity and was the subject of many portraits; bawdy poetry was written about him and his face appeared as a carving on walking sticks and door knockers.

This rarely seen knocker probably dates from about 1900, or earlier. It was made in England and is brass. It's smallish, only 3 inches tall and 1 3/8 inches wide. In good condition, with no corrosion--but has a nice patina. Works well in its intended job of door knocking.
