History + Lore: Quartz is believed to be derived from the Greek 'krystallos', meaning “ice”, or the German word 'quarz'. Some of the earliest primitive tools were created from quartz due to its hardness. Amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethystos which translates as "not drunken". The story of amethyst revolves around the god Dionysus and the remorseful wine tears he wept, dyeing the clear quartz statue of the young maiden Amethyst purple.
