George Washington Carver Collectible Doll Boxed Toy: vtg 70s Hallmark Famous American Series 1 cloth botanist inventor doll birthday wedding gift

Honk if you are a botanist or inventor fan! Cute funny gag gift for someone graduating from college and going out into the world of botanists and/or inventors!

Bring back the good ol' peanut farm days and bring some history to this year's Christmas New Year's costume or Thanksgiving festivities. Read some interesting info. about him below.

SIZE: George Washington Carver cloth doll toy is approximately 7" tall and from hand to hand about 3.5 inches wide.

CONDITION: He is in good to excellent used vintage condition and so is his house box, although it shows some storage wear, like the chimney has a crease in it, etc. Made in Taiwan, August 1979. Made with cotton and synthetic materials.

This was a classroom prop for studying famous Americans and history, such as George Washington Carver, PT Barnum and Davy Crockett, so he's been well loved, but my students took good care of realia props for the next year's students. Request it and others I have can be listed.

ZOOM in on all photos as they are part of the description. Thank you.

LAST DETAIL: Syringe pen is included, but I've used it and the ink inside has dried out, so you don't have to worry about it leaking during shipping. Don't ask me why a botanist or inventor would need a syringe pen! but my students thought it was cool prop!

Interesting Info about George Washington Carver from wikipedia:

1. He was an American botanist and inventor. The exact day and year of his birth are unknown; he was born into slavery in Missouri, either in 1861, or January 1864.

2. His master, Moses Carver, was a German American immigrant who had purchased George's parents, Mary and Giles, from William P. McGinnis on October 9, 1855, for $700. Carver had 10 sisters and a brother, all of whom died prematurely.

3. When George was only a week old, he, a sister, and his mother were kidnapped by night raiders from Arkansas. George's brother, James, was rushed to safety from the kidnappers. The kidnappers sold the slaves in Kentucky. Moses Carver hired John Bentley to find them, but he located only the infant George. Moses negotiated with the raiders to gain the boy's return, and rewarded Bentley.

4. After slavery was abolished, Moses Carver and his wife Susan raised George and his older brother James as their own children. They encouraged George to continue his intellectual pursuits, and "Aunt Susan" taught him the basics of reading and writing.

Black people were not allowed at the public school in Diamond Grove. Learning there was a school for black children 10 miles (16 km) south in Neosho, George decided to go there. When he reached the town, he found the school closed for the night. He slept in a nearby barn. By his own account, the next morning he met a kind woman, Mariah Watkins, from whom he wished to rent a room.

When he identified himself as "Carver's George," as he had done his whole life, she replied that from now on his name was "George Carver". George liked Mariah Watkins, and her words, "You must learn all you can, then go back out into the world and give your learning back to the people", made a great impression on him.

5. In my classroom, when we studied him, we also grew peanuts and identified all products made with peanuts because out of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers his most popular contained 105 food recipes using peanuts.

He also developed and promoted about 100 products made from peanuts that were useful for the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP.

He was recognized for his many achievements and talents. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed Carver a "Black Leonardo".

I have other Famous American Hallmark cloth dolls some in their boxes: 2 Indian Maiden with boxes as Pocahontas and Sacajawea. I sometimes used Molly Pitcher for Betsy Ross no box. Let me know if you are interested and I'll list them.
