I love to draw from nature. This print was drawn from the clematis flower that blooms every year outside my studio window and produces large, beautiful purple blossoms. The entire plant has an elegance that inspires me every summer. There are only two states in this small edition and each is one-of-a kind. This is the second State.

This artwork is an intaglio print. Intaglio is an umbrella term for images incised on metal plates. Examples of intaglio techniques include etching, drypoint, aquatint, engraving, softground and mezzotint. Specifically, this “Clematis-State 2” print is a drypoint.

Drypoint is very immediate in that it can be used like a drawing. One sketches directly on a metal plate, in this case copper, with a sharp tool (i.e. a diamond point drypoint needle). The plate is then inked. With dampened paper and felts (blankets) placed on top, the plate is hand cranked through a high pressure press setting and the image is transferred to the dampened paper.
