This beautiful exposed coil vase has a fascinating mottled tan and blue surface with hints of red and green. It is colored with Terra sigillata and oxides to make the tan clay coils look stony. The interior is glazed with a green and tan glaze that nicely complements the exterior. This vase measures about 5 inches at the widest and 9 1/2 inches tall. The decorative open throat on this vase is sure to draw attention.

The base was coiled and smoothed together, then the top section was built up over several sessions by forming motifs out of individual coils of clay and fusing them into the lower section. The vase was allowed to dry slowly, then before the first firing several different colors of terra sigillata were sponged on and burnished to begin the coloring process. After the bisque firing, oxides were applied to the exterior and wiped back and glaze was applied to the interior. The exterior surface has a slight sheen from the burnished Terra sigillata, and invites the hand to follow the spirals and coils.

Because of the construction, this vase will only hold a few inches of water, but it can be used with water or with dry arrangements or as an accent piece on its own.
